Codependency is described as an individual relying on someone else to meet all of their emotional and self-esteem needs. Codependency is commonly found within toxic romantic relationships; it can also be found within dysfunctional family dynamics. Codependency also refers to relationships that encourage or enable inadequate behaviour. Individuals with codependency issues often have very low self-esteem; they always feel the need to please people; they often lack boundaries; they obsess over people and relationships; they have trouble communicating their thoughts or feelings; and they feel the need to take control in order to feel safe and secure. It is proven that symptoms of codependency can worsen if left untreated; therapy that encourages the use of common sense can immensely reverse symptoms of codependency.
